Green Valley Ranch

Green Initiative

GREEN VALLEY RANCH — GREEN FROM THE START.

The Green Movement was just getting started, when Green Valley Ranch opened in 2001, but it was something our resort’s management knew we should be a part of. So from the moment we opened, GVR has gone to great effort to become more energy efficient and conserve our precious resources. Many of these efforts are invisible to our guests, but they continue to this day — and then some. As they have been from the start, our Green Goals are to reduce our carbon footprint, water usage, waste in landfills, and to help educate our Team Members about how they can do the same in their lives outside of GVR.

TAKING RECYCLING UP A NOTCH, EVERY YEAR.

In 2006, GVR implemented an advanced recycling program which continues to expand every year, in an attempt to save as many resources, and reuse as many materials, as possible.

Notable Highlights

  • Products recovered include: glass, cardboard, aluminum, plastic, food waste, fryer oil and kitchen grease
  • In 2010, GVR decreased its filling of trash compactors by 43%
  • GVR recycles 21 tons of solid waste per month
  • GVR recycles 21 tons of solid waste per month
  • Plastic, aluminum & glass: 4 tons per month
  • Cardboard: 17 tons per month
  • GVR recycles 23,000 gallons of used kitchen grease & fryer oil annually, which is converted into bio-diesel fuel or other recycled uses
  • Our overall recycling efforts save approximately more than 10 trash-filled trucks from going to landfills each month
  • Uniforms for our Housekeeping and In-Room-Dining Team Members are made out of 100% recycled polyester
  • Recycling of all light bulbs throughout our property

DISPOSAL CAN BE GREEN, TOO.

We believe almost everything can be reused, and our staff works hard to do just that every day. We take great pride in knowing that so much of our resort’s waste gets reused, or disposed of in the most responsible way.

Notable Highlights

  • Food waste is delivered for use as feed at R.C. Combs animal farm
  • Depleted batteries are collected and sent to the appropriate hazardous waste facility
  • Burned-out linear and compact fluorescent light tubes and bulbs are collected and sent for disposal at appropriate hazardous waste facility

Conserving water because it’s a desert out there.

Obviously, water is Southern Nevada’s most precious resource. At GVR, we’ve gone to great lengths to reduce our daily water usage, and we’re always looking for more.

Notable Highlights

  • Linen Exchange Program – towels left on rack do not get washed, substantially reducing annual water consumption
  • Water-smart plants and artificial turf are used throughout GVR including its lush pool area
  • Continuously improving zero scaping of non-efficient areas

Saving more and more Energy & Natural Gas.

We’re working hard to cut our use of Energy and Natural Gas. Since we started our Green Initiative, we‘ve essentially saved enough energy to power more than 325 homes annually.

Notable Highlights

  • Since its last addition in 2007, we’ve reduced our energy consumption by about 10%
  • Energy efficient guest room thermostats reduce energy consumption by over 35% versus traditional thermostats
  • Our guest rooms feature energy-efficient compact fluorescent lighting
  • Our guest room corridors feature energy-efficient LED lighting
  • The Central Plant, which supplies cooling and heating to the buildings, is among the most efficient in Clark County
  • GVR is currently installing more energy-efficient lighting, which will further reduce electricity consumption in 2011
  • In updating our transportation fleet GVR has recently purchased two new “Flex-Fuel” SUV’s
  • Car-Charging stations in our Valets for Hybrid Vehicles
